HDMI Org, licensor with the HDMI standard, has demanded that Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables be used from the market because they are "unlicensed." According to TechRadar, the cables male-to-male mini displayport cable fall afoul of HDMI licensing standards which declare that any cable using a male HDMI connector at one end should also use a male HDMI connector on the opposite end. Other things doesn't fulfill the standards and so can not be sold. This doesn't affect the sale of cable adapters, such as the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter in love with Apple's site, because said adapters possess a female HDMI connector that also needs a separate, additional HDMI cable to plug in to the display. Those types of adapters are okay beneath the HDMI standards, but a cable with one kind of male connector on one end plus an HDMI connector alternatively apparently isn't. Picky, picky. Those of you looking to bypass the aggregated cost of a dongle adapter along with an HDMI cable in favor of a one-stop solution for hooking a more recent Mac into an HDMI display had better act fast; such cables are still available on Apple's web store for the present time, but MacRumors points out they've recently been withdrawn from Monoprice.
